the Museum of Art and Design

presents  LOOT: MAD About Jewelry,

MAD's annual exhibition and sale of

one-of-a-kind contemporary jewelry.

 

MAD describes the event as,

Each year LOOT celebrates the work of fifty international jewelry artists whose collections we deem inspiring, creative and wearable. You will see inventively modern pieces in gold, sterling silver and semiprecious stones alongside jewelry made of unexpected materials such as titanium, stainless steel, glass, wood, rubber, fabric, and found objects. We’re confident that every single jeweler we discover and invite to LOOT meets our three-fold criteria of excellence in design originality, artistic expressiveness, and outstanding craftsmanship. Most of these artists have never before shown their jewelry in New York and will be at the Museum to meet you and discuss their work.

Same chair just a big boy now! I can't believe Will is in First Grade.  There is such a huge change from Kindergarten to First Grade.  Will told me First grade isn't as fun that it is all work and no play!  I hope everyone is having a great start to a new school year.

Variations on a Theme - Hilary Hachey Jewelry

Repetition is a central theme
for Hilary Hachey.
Using a combination of cast and hand-fabricated elements
she focuses on two central collections
to showcase her beautiful jewelry.

Her work is characterized by seemingly endless,
fascinating variations on a theme.
 One collection features a curvaceous oval shape
and, by contrast, the other emphasizes
linear use of cubes and squares.
 
And that is the point.

This jewelry is based on the principles
of the Bauhaus movement which is
defined by, among other things,
a definite geometric style -
 it is the repetition, asymmetry,
and specific geometric shapes that form the
 visual language for her jewelry.
Even with these repeating elements
this jewelry is far from monotonous or boring.  
Elements are grouped in myriad ways to
make this jewelry seem rhythmic and almost lyrical.

 

This is how the artist describes her work,

“I consider my work to be architectonic. That is, a type of perceived sensibility to form and design that prefers the simple over the complex, and the well-built over the mass-produced. I adopted the Bauhaus name for my jewelry because the Bauhaus aesthetic utilizes economy of method and severe geometry of form.

She seems to have an enormous repertoire of
designs that use the cube, box and oval as
 primary structural themes, and she creates
endless, expressive riffs on these themes.

What I like is that each piece is familiar, but not the same.

It all comes together under Hilary's discerning eye to
create pieces that are edgy yet cohesive.

Raw and Rugged - Elisenda De Haro Jewelry

Asymmetrical shapes and variegated colors
dominate jewelry by Elisenda De Haro.

The textures tend to be
 the first thing one notices.
She has created several collections but it's
her 'Arrecifes de Rubi' (Ruby Reefs) Collection that
easily captures my attention.

Made with oxidized silver, gold, and various
gemstones this jewelry is reminiscent of the
coarse, unrestrained formations of
 rocks, canyons and sea cliffs.

This jewelry evokes a spirit of
spontaneous, raw impulse.
And by oxidizing the metal, an unexpected
colorful patina helps to soften the surfaces.

Here are examples of her work that emphasize

 rich colors and unusual textures.

 

     This work is created thoughtfully and meticulously
yet the results appear spontaneous and raw.

I admire her innovations and experimentation

to push the boundaries of 

what jewelry should look like.

Savoring those last few days of summer
